Obama’s Online Town Haul

Thursday, March 26, 2009

By all accounts, President Obama’s online town hall meeting was a big success.  Because it was a first of its kind for a sitting President, the media fawned over the idea all morning, meaning the event was a huge PR success before the broadcast even started.  The participation numbers are impressive as well.  As I write this, the official stats on Whitehouse.gov state “92,934 people have submitted 104,070 questions and cast 3,605,903 votes.”  Looking behind these numbers gives you the true measure of success for this excercise.

Why Congress keeps delaying the Digital TV transition

Monday, March 23, 2009

Now I don’t want to confuse everyone, since the digital transition is not just about HDTV (many existing and new digital stations will broadcast in standard definition after the the transition), but Politico has a great piece today on how the clarity of HDTV is taking it’s toll on politicians. With standard definition television, blemishes and imperfections could be covered up with makeup, leaving TV personalities and politicians looking their best.

With HDTV, the clarity of the picture makes “cover up” attempts look even worse than the blemish itself, leaving politicians to let their imperfections shine through. Politico points out that the change has the potential to cost votes. The quote of the story comes from a bystander at an event watching Bill Clinton on a high definition monitor: “Clinton looks older than T. Boone Pickens”

Boozing it up in North Dakota

Friday, March 20, 2009

A North Dakota group is under fire for spending federal disaster relief funds on “unallowable or questionable” items, including a good amount of booze.

How does the group’s president, Mark Weber, respond?

“We would go out to supper and have a beer or two,” Weber said. “These are things people do when they’re getting something done.

RIP Seattle P-I

Monday, March 16, 2009

Another newspaper bites the dust.  Seattle Post-Intelligencer owner Hearst will cease print publication tomorrow, making the 146-year-old paper the largest to go digital only.

“Tonight we’ll be putting the paper to bed for the last time,” Editor and Publisher Roger Oglesby told a silent newsroom Monday morning. “But the bloodline will live on.”

PETA is now pro-cloning (for George Clooney’s sweat)

Friday, March 13, 2009

Only on Friday the 13th could the wakos at PETA get this wacky.  The group wants to take a gym towel used by George Clooney and clone the flavor of his sweat to make CloFu (George Clooney flavored tofu).  I wish I was making this up.  How about a nice cloned CloFurky for your next Thanksgiving feast?
